Susan Beatty and her husband Larry began homeschooling their three children in 1982. They graduated all three children from high school at home. Susan is the co-founder of CHEA of California, a member of its Board of Directors, its communications director and the author of An Introduction to Home Education manual. Susan is a professional writer/journalist with a BA degree (1971) from Cal State University Los Angeles, and a graduate of CLASS seminars.
Chuck and Pam Geib
Chuck and Pam Geib began researching home education in 1982. They began teaching their two youngest sons in 1985. Both sons have since graduated from homeschooling. The oldest son and his wife are homeschooling seven of their own children. Over the years the Geibs have spoken to countless groups and conferences. They have also served on several homeschooling support group leadership boards. They currently serve on CHEA’s Regional Advisory Board.

Susi Khan is a critical care RN who has practiced for the past 28 years. She has three school-aged children who attended a private Christian school until 2013 when she first noticed some concerning changes in the curriculum. She found these resulted from the current education reform, Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Susi decided to homeschool her children after learning that her private school would continue to integrate these new standards, which were untested and unproven. She is very involved in educating parents about CCSS and has spoken with hundreds of parents, parents, and elected officials on the subject. Susi enjoys spending time with her friends, family, and husband of 31 years.
Rebecca and her husband Ed taught their five children at home for 22 years. All of them graduated from their homeschool. They are now the proud grandparents of four rambunctious boys and three gorgeous girls. Rebecca, a former PSP administrator, currently serves as CHEA’s Support Network director and on the CHEA Board of Directors. She is the author of the devotional Let Not Your Feathers Be Ruffled.
Author, blogger, Beth Mora is wife to Forrest, mom of eight, nana of one, and homeschool mom. She is the creator and teacher-on-camera for Here To Help Learning, where she is affectionately known as, “Mrs. Mora.” Everything she does, whether laughable or heart gripping, is done to honor One, without apology. God’s grace is the salve that has healed her own life, and God’s grace is what she offers liberally to others.
Carleen is the owner of Skills for Success Learning and former homeschooling mom. Her teaching experience includes over 25 years with regular and special education students in public and private educational settings. In 2005, she was endorsed by the Association of Educational Therapists by completing all of the rigorous requirements to earn the title Professional Education Therapist. Carleen has received specialized training in Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes, Barton Reading and Spelling System, LANGUAGE!, Project Read, Orton-Gillingham, RAVE-O and teaching strategies. She is also a Cogmed Working Memory Certified Training Coach, providing training and classroom intervention strategies for children and adults with working memory challenges.
Nathan is now in his 12th year working full time at Family Protection Ministries to protect private homeschooling in California. He was himself homeschooled kindergarten through high school and received a BA in Political Studies from The Master's College. Currently he serves as the FPM California Director, Legislative Liaison, and conference speaker to homeschool leaders, parents and teens. He and his wife Betsy were married in 2004 and have five children, ages 9 to baby! They are involved in their church, and homeschool their own children.
Nelson Prince has worked for Sony Corporation for the last 13 years and has been constantly taught security and safe business practices that he has collected over the years and applied at home as well.
David and Shirley Quine
David and Shirley Quine bring 30 years of experience raising and educating their nine children. Their presentations are immensely practical, real and encouraging as they share from their hearts the biblical vision and directive of child raising. In addition to discipling their own children, the Quines are committed to encouraging and leading other families to this high calling.
Penny Ross runs Tools for the Home Educator in Torrance, selling used curriculum and providing consulting services and training to homeschool parents. She has served in leadership at Hope Chapel Academy, a PSP in Hermosa Beach, and spoken to homeschool groups throughout Southern California. Penny and her husband Greg have three grown children who were homeschooled from birth through high school graduation.
Tonya Salinas is the PSP Administrator for Allegiant Christian School (ACS) and its co-op programs, both classical and traditional. Tonya developed ACS’s classical program for private Christian school students in grades pre-K through 12th after serving as a Campus Director, Foundations and Essentials Director, High School Literature & Composition Class Facilitator, and High School Philosophy Class Facilitator for a nationwide classical program. ACS’s classical program is much loved and highly regarded by students and parents. Tonya and her husband Ishmael are in their 16th year of homeschooling. They have graduated three of their four boys and are blessed to be teaching their youngest in the classical manner.
Mary and husband Paul began homeschooling in 1986.Their children graduated, married, moved into their own homes, got decent jobs, have great kids of their own, and are doing fine out in “the real world” despite the fears of homeschool naysayers. Mary wrote The High School Handbook based on years of experience, research, and prayer. She speaks at home education conventions, encouraging parents to seek God’s unique plan for their families. Mary has been enjoying her "retirement" from active homeschooling by continuing to serve on CHEA’s Board of Directors until this past year. She also found time to go back to school, get a law degree, and become an attorney, practicing in northern California and serving as “of counsel” for the Home School Legal Defense Association.
J. Michael Smith
For the last 33 years, Mike Smith, president of the Home School Legal Defense Association, has been defending and advancing the right of parents to teach their children at home. It began when his wife began teaching their children at home in 1981 after he heard Dorothy and Raymond Moore explain the benefits of homeschooling on Focus on the Family radio. As a homeschooling father and lawyer, Mike became well known as a person who could get you out of trouble for homeschooling. In 1983, he had a fortuitous meeting with Mike Farris, then a lawyer in Washington State. Mike Farris asked Mike to join him in an endeavor to make homeschool legal in America which led to the founding of HSLDA. Today, homeschooling is legal in every state.
Marie, married to Don for 31 years, made the decision to homeschool prior to having their first child in 1986. They have five children, all of whom were homeschooled from kindergarten through high school, ranging in age from 18-29. They have been active in the homeschooling community in various activities, including serving together on the board of a PSP for the last 25 years. Additionally, Marie was a founding board member for Stoa, a national homeschooling speech and debate league.
Marianne has been married to her husband, Laurence, since 1991. She is a homeschooling mother of eight children ages 5 to 24, including adventurous and homeschooled sailors, Zac and Abby Sunderland, known for their world-record setting around the world sailing campaigns. Marianne is passionate about encouraging families to discover and nurture their children’s God-given gifts and talents, in and outside of the classroom. She also encourages women to joyfully love and serve their families. Roslyn Ballard served as South Bay Faith Academy's Junior High and High School Principal for the past ten years after 20 years of homeschooling. She is currently attending culinary school to fulfill her dream of becoming a chef. She still plans to support biblical home education as she assists in educating her grandchildren and through advising homeschooling parents. Edward Caballero is the pastor at Anaheim Community Church and a graduate of The Master's College and The Master's Seminary. He and his wife Monique have been married since 1989 and have four children: Robert and Timothy (homeschool graduates) and Tabitha and Joshua (homeschooled sixth grader and kindergartener). In addition to his pastoral ministries, Edward teaches junior high and high school electives for Whittier Christian PSP. He has taught classes on biblical theology, church history, the history and theology of music, Christian literature, and practical theology. As a parent, pastor, and teacher, Edward firmly believes and teaches that the spiritual transformation, training, and growth of his (and your) children is the key to seeing them living lives that honor God.
Mike Derichsweiler's story is one characterized by God's grace and leading. He graduated from high school, but did not pursue college. He wanted to work, and went straight into the workforce. He prayed that God would open a door for a career and the ability to support a family. A friend loaned him the clothes to be interviewed which led to a job offer over many other more-qualified candidates with a multi-million dollar company, one that usually requires a degree, sometimes a master's degree. He's been with the company 10 years and sits in on many interviews because management seeks his opinion of the candidates. He and his wife have three girls and two boys under the age of eight and have been homeschooling four years.
Victor Leon is the owner of Lions Automotive. He's been involved with automotive repair since 1978 as a freshman in high school. After high school he moved on to LA Trade Tech and graduated with a AS degree in Automotive Technology. From LA Trade Tech he worked for a small independent garage (Rick’s Automotive in Hollywood) then moved on to General Motors, Cadillac, and Ford Dealerships. He continued his education through factory training in both domestic and foreign auto repair and maintenance. Finally, he's acquired certification as an ASE Master Technician in all makes and models.
Dr. John Riel
John Riel, MD, graduated at the top of his medical class at Emory University and trained at UCLA. He is an expert at emergencies, cell biology and health. He will blow your mind and you will be entertained!
Maurice Welch serves as the Director of the Worship Ministry, leading people into the presence of God through anointed worship at the RLF Church. He is a sought-after speaker on the topics of marriage and parenting, with a specific emphasis on the issues and concerns of new and single fathers.
