The hardest thing about being a leader is continuing to lead even when you don't want to. Sometimes it's just because you're having a bad day, or you're tired, or you have a headache, or you have a dentist appointment, or the car broke down, or it's raining ... You get the picture. Sometimes you just don't feel like it. But other times it's because you're going through severe trials: health problems, a death in the family, bearing the burdens of those closest to you who are going through these problems. Whatever the reason, some days you just don't want to get out of bed, open the emails, or answer your phone. So, what do you do?
Maybe you just need to stay in bed, don't open your emails, and turn off the phone. Maybe you need to hit snooze and catch up on your sleep. Maybe you need to read that book or watch that movie. Maybe you need to take a walk or snuggle up with your dog on the couch. I just gave a list of "maybes." These might help, but there are some things you need to do to get back on track, and these are nonnegotiable.
Pray
Whatever is causing you to feel like you just don't want to do this anymore, lay it at the Lord's feet. Ask for God's guidance, wisdom, discernment, and provision. He will answer! We just need to be still before Him and listen.
"Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you." (James 4:8a)
"Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know." (Jeremiah 33:3)
Read God's Word
Whatever answer you're looking for, whatever situation you find yourself in, whatever you need, you have the answers in God's Word. There is no situation you might find yourself in that the Lord is unaware of. There is nothing so big happening in your life right now that you cannot find a word from God in your Bible. I love how the Bible is filled with real-life examples of people who experienced terrible trials and didn't always have a happy ending. Because real life sometimes doesn't have a happy ending. But that does not mean God is any less in control or that God has no reason for what is happening.
"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." (Psalm 119:105)
"And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose." (Romans 8:28)
Praise
We need to spend less time complaining and more time praising. Put on your favorite worship song, create a praise list for times just like this. Spend some time in the Psalms. Read how David reacted to his trials, especially Psalm 145.
"Every day I will bless You, and I will praise Your name forever and ever. Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; and His greatness is unsearchable." (Psalm 145:2-3)
"From the rising of the sun to its setting, the name of the Lord is to be praised." (Psalm 113:3)
Back to Basics
Ask the Lord to give you a fresh vision. What are you doing? Why are you doing it? Where are you going? Ask God to bring clarity of thought to all you have going on, and then just do the next right thing. God, in His timing, will bring all things to fruition and show you what it was for.
Remember, God doesn't call the equipped; He equips the called.
"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up." (Galatians 6:9)
